Friday, August 11, 2006 - Fair Youth Musical Preview

OC Fair Youth Musical

Today, Union City Rotarians will enjoy a preview of the Youth Musical which will be performed next week during the 2006 edition of the award-winning Obion County Fair.
Dateline: Rock and Roll is the name of the musical, featuring favorite hits from years gone by. Bill Davis, Ryan Stone and Phyllis Rauchle have all helped direct and produce this year’s musical. This is the 16th year for the Youth Musical at the fair. Bill Davis has been directing the event since 2000.
Performers include Sarah Beavers, Jeri Covington, Lauren Chivers, Tabitha Covington, Jade Davis, Andrew and Rebecca Easley, Daniel Evans, McCall Graves, Chelsea Hale, Jared Hamlin, Maddie Harris, Jessica and Savannah Jones, Caroline Kirkland, Kristen May, Zoe Ramage, Sarah Reese, Tyler Sherwood, Morgan Stone, Rachel and Sarah Triplett, Amber Victory, Bonnie Wilkes, Nathan Woods and Jamie Worrell.
Sit back and enjoy the sounds of some of Obion County’s brightest young people!

UC Football Preview

Next Week, Union City High School football coach Jimmy Fishel will talk about the upcoming season.
Coach Fishel, who guided the Golden Tornadoes to the Blue Cross State Championship Game last year, is in his fourth year as coach of the Purple & Gold. He’ll be joined next week by senior players and cheerleaders and members of his coaching staff.
With a senior-heavy squad last year, UC posted a brilliant 11-4 record in their first year in Class-A, winning 9 straight games before falling to powerful Trousdale County in the Championship Game at MTSU.
This year, UC is in a “rebuilding” mode, but still fully expects to compete for the Region 7-A crown once again and hopefully go deep into the playoffs once again.
UC opens the 2006 season two weeks from tonight at Westview (UTM Stadium).
Football is right around the corner!

District Governor Here

Last week, Rotary District Governor Slick Frazer of Murfreesboro made a visit to challenge UC Rotarians to “lead the way” in 2006-07.
“Lead The Way” is this year’s Rotary International theme, chosen by new RI President Bill Boyd.
Gov. Frazer was introduced by assistant district governor Audrie Roberts of Martin.
Frazer, a 15-year Rotarian, gave us the genesis of his nickname, “Slick.”
“My grandfather delivered more than 5,000 babies during his lifetime, and he made a practice of naming the babies as he delivered them,” Frazer said. “I was named ‘Little Sly’—after my uncle—and it eventually evolved into ‘Big Slick’—which then, just ‘Slick’.”
Using a slide show, Governor Frazer presented current RI numbers, reflecting a 1.2 million member service club, which today, has active clubs in Russia, China, Prague, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam. Efforts are underway to revive a Rotary Club in Havana, Cuba.
Slick spent much of his time talking about Rotary’s role in the “global village” and reiterating Rotary’s emphasis on literacy, water management, health and hunger issues and the family of Rotary.
He noted that of the world’s 6-billion population, 4-billion are illiterate. He said in the last 100 years, the world’s population has tripled while water usage has increased six-fold. One of RI’s goals is to reduce by 50 percent those who currently don’t have access to safe drinking water.
Gov. Frazer urged Rotarians to use their thinking, talent, time and treasure to make the world a better place!
Best of luck to Gov. Frazer during the 2006-07 Rotary year.

Think About It

If February is the shortest month of the year, what is the second shortest and why?

     April—29 days and 23 hours—due to
                 Daylight Saving Time.

What time is it at the North Pole?

It’s any time you want it to be—as all
time zones come together at both poles.
And every direction you looked would be
       southwardly!
