Friday, August 18, 2006 - UCHS Football Preview from Coach Jimmy Fishel
UC Football Coach Jimmy Fishel
Today, Union City High School football coach Jimmy Fishel will introduce his senior players, assistant coaches and senior cheerleaders during a preview of the upcoming season, which begins a week from tonight against Westview in Martin. The Golden Tornadoes posted an 11-4 record last year, including nine straight wins heading into the Blue Cross Class-A State Championship game against Trousdale County. UC lost 22 seniors through graduation—so will be forced to field a young team this year, against a scheduled that is particularly hard in the first-half. This year, UC will use a “spread” formation with junior quarterback Brett White operating from the “shotgun” most of the time. Demetrius Bracey, Scott Huff, Mark Evans, Taylor Bruff, Bryce Moran, Jordan James and Lucas Flood are key returning players. Welcome Coach Fishel and best of luck in the new season!
UTM Football Preview From Coach Jason Simpson
Next Week, new UTM football coach Jason Simpson will be here to preview the Skyhawks’ 2006 season. “One Heartbeat” is the team slogan this year as the youthful Coach Simpson and his staff look to continue build on the momentum of last year’s ___ record. The Skyhawks have been picked to finish 6th in the OVC this year, despite returning 42 lettermen, including four All-OVC players Donald Chapman, Taurean Stephens, Alex Atkins and David Gilmore. Chapman led the OVC with 1,396 rushing yards and 16 TD’s last year. Coach Simpson, who takes over for Matt Griffin (now at Murray State), welcomed 85 for fall drills three weeks ago and has four players battling for the starting QB job—Drew Jackson, Greg Preston, Dexter Anoka and James Pritchard. Receiver E. J. Daniel has transferred to UTM from Louisville. Go Skyhawks!
Youth Musical Troupe Presents Fair Show
Last week, Rotarians were entertained by the Obion County Fair Youth Musical troupe, directed by Bill Davis. The group, which has been a popular act at this week’s fair, make their first “public” appearance at Rotary each year—a tune up for the real thing at the fair. The group performed a number of popular songs from years gone by as part of the Dateline: Rock & Roll musical, including such favorites as Yesterday, Up, Up and Away, Let It Be, Don’t Worry—Be Happy, Rhythm Nation and You Make Me Feel Like Dancing. This year’s Youth Musical performers include Sarah Beavers, Jeri Covington, Lauren Chivers, Tabitha Covington, Jade Davis, Andrew Easley, Rebecca Easley, Daniel Evans, McCall Graves, Chelsea Hale, Jared Hamlin, Maddie Harris, Jessica Jones, Savannah Jones, Caroline Kirkland, Kristen May, Zoe Ramage, Sarah Reese, Tyler Sherwood, Morgan Stone, Rachel Triplett, Sarah Triplett, Amber Victory, Bonnie Wilkes, Nathan Woods and Jamie Worrell. Bill Davis has been directing the Youth Musical since 2000, with the assistance this year of his mom—Phyllis Rauchle and Ryan Stone. Part of the highlight of last week’s visit to Rotary was when the cast members came into the crowd and danced with various Rotarians. Some of our guys have some pretty funky moves. If you have not attended this year’s fair, you still have tonight and tomorrow night to do so. Tonight’s attractions are the Demolition Derby, Youth Musical, Bluegrass-Gospel act Jargon and the Myers Carnival. See you at the Fair!
