Dr. Wright Jernigan Comes Home
Today, Rotarians say “welcome home” to Dr. Wright Jernigan, a Union City native who has joined the medical staff at BMH-UC as its new Vascular/General Surgeon. Dr. Jernigan will speak on the specifics of the types of services he is bringing to Union City and the advantages of these procedures. He will also give a brief overview of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery and recent advancements in the field. Vascular surgery focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases affecting arteries, veins and lymphatics. Dr. Jernigan graduated Union City High School in 1989 and attended UT-Knoxville, where he met his wife, Samantha. They have three boys, Tristan (9), Austin (6) and Grant (3). Dr. Jernigan and his family lived in Memphis for the past 13 years where he graduated from the UT College of Medicine in 1998. He then completed his seven year General Surgery residency, followed by a year of Vascular surgery training.
OCCHS Football Update from Coach Darren Bowling
Next Week, Obion County Central football coach Darren Bowling will speak to Rotarians about the 2006 season for the Rebels, who started their season last week with a 21-14 win over Dresden. Despite a 3-7 record last year, the Rebels did manage to beat Union City and Covington, who was ranked #1 in Class-3A at the time, in back-to-back games last year. This year, the Rebels sport a roster that includes 19 seniors, plus 13 players with at least two years of starting experience. Junior Logan Parker returns at quarterback while Garrett Grady and Chase Clanton head up the running-back positions. Jacob Fulbright has sustained a serious injury in pre-season, and might be out for the season. Other key players for the Rebels this year are Savion Hayslett, Cameron Bailey, Steven Weaks and Jimmy Crackle. The Rebels host powerful Crockett County at 7:30 tonight in Troy. Good Luck Rebels in 2006.
Skyhawks Raring to Go in 2006
Last week, Rotarians heard from UT-Martin football coach Jason Simpson on the upcoming season, which begins tomorrow for the Skyhawks as they play at Ohio University. Coach Simpson, who doesn’t look old enough to shave, has actually been around the college game for the past decade, having served assistant coaching stints at Delta State, Jacksonville State, Texas State and UT-Chattanooga, where he helped revamp an offense to the point numerous school records were set. Coach Simpson played both football and baseball at Mississippi State University before transferring to Southern Mississippi, where he graduated in 1994. “I’m excited about being at UT-Martin and our upcoming season,” Simpson said. “Until last year, there was the perception that you could not win at UTM—but we now know that you can, with the right amount of dedication and work, the right kind of athletes, and a few good bounces.” Jason was introduced by former UCHS coach Randy Barnes, who was recently named Director of Football Operations at UTM. Barnes took up about 15 minutes of Coach Simpson’s speaking time in his introduction of the new Skyhawk coach. The Skyhawks, who posted 6 wins last year, and went 4-4 in the OVC, have the foundation for a tremendous season this year. Fifteen seniors are returning and the Hawks boast 8 returning defensive starters. Led by tailback Donald Chapman, a pre-season All-American, the Skyhawks now have a bit of a swagger in their walk as the new season approaches. Chapman is coming off two consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons—and has his sights set on smashing Bobby Fowler’s all-time school rushing record this year. The Skyhawks have five home games this year, starting Thursday night, Sept 7, when they host Urbana University at 6 pm at Hardy Graham Stadium.
