Friday, September 8, 2006 - Coach Darren Bowling Previews 2006 Football Season for OCCHS Rebels
Rebels Have High Hopes For 2006 Season
Today, Rotarians welcome Obion County Central football coach Darren Bowling for his annual visit to talk Rebel Football. OCCHS has split their first two games, beating Dresden 21-14, but losing to powerful Crockett County last week, 42-7. Tonight, the Rebels visit Gibson County. Despite going 3-7 last year, OC beat Union City for a fourth straight time and knocked off Covington, who at the time, was ranked #1 in the state in Class-3A. This year, the Rebels sport a roster that includes 19 seniors, plus 13 players with at least two years of starting experience. Junior Logan Parker returns at quarterback while Garrett Grady, Chase Clanton and Justin Ogden head up the skilled positions. Highly regarded Jacob Fulbright sustained a serious injury in pre-season and could miss the entire season. Other key players for the Rebels this year are Savion Hayslett, Cameron Bailey, Steven Weaks and Jimmy Crackle. Welcome Coach Bowling. Go Rebels!
Fall Fest Preview Next Week
Next Week, we get a sneak preview of Fall Fest 2006 from board members Robin Wood and Glenda Chrisp. After their talk, Mike Cox will speak briefly on the Community Concerts Association. Fall Fest has become one of Obion County’s most anticipated annual events, spanning the course of nine days, beginning Friday, Sept 15, with the Tennis Tournament, and concluding Sept 23 with the Buddy Jewell concert. In between, there will be an Appraisal Fair, Chili Cookoff, Miss Fall Fest Tennessee Beauty Pageant, BBQ Cookoff, Commercial Bank Kid’s Day, Talent Contest, Airport Extravaganza, Backlawn Blues concert at the library, Pride of Obion County Luncheon, Chalk-Art Contest, Musicfest, Steve Whitten Concert and Magnificent Imposters Contest. A lot of work has gone into planning this year’s Fall Fest—it needs your support!
Vascular Surgeon Dr. Wright Jernigan
Last week, Dr. Wright Jernigan, a Union City native who has joined the medical staff at BMH-UC as a new Vascular/General Surgeon, presented an interesting program on recent advances in surgery now available at the local hospital. Dr. Jernigan graduated Union City High School in 1989. After attending UT-Knoxville, he enrolled at the UT College of Medicine, where he has lived the past 13 years while completing his training and residency requirements. Dr. Jernigan and wife, Samantha, have three sons: Tristan (9), Austin (6) and Grant (3). “I’m often asked why I decided to return to Union City to open my practice,” Dr. Jernigan said. “There’s not another place to go to be a good father and husband and to raise my family.” Using a PowerPoint presentation. Dr. Jernigan said vascular surgery focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases affecting arteries, veins and lymphatics. He used photographs and diagrams to show how surgeons today treat such illnesses as abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) with angioplasty, stenting and rotor-rooting procedures. “I could not ask more of the local hospital in terms of support,” Dr. Jernigan said. “If I need it, they get it.” Dr. Jernigan showed how surgeons can perform endovascular Triple-A repairs using two small incisions and today’s sophisticated equipment rather than the traditional large surgical wounds of yesteryear. Thanks Dr. Jernigan for last week’s program and thanks for choosing Union City as the place you want to grow your practice and raise your family.
