Dr. Bob Cameron on New Birth Control Measures
Today, Dr. Robert Cameron will share some new medical strategies, including a new birth control procedure, with Rotarians. People have been using birth control for thousands of years—all the way back to Ancient Greece, where linen condoms, dried fish power and sea sponges were used. Today, there’s a new method called Essure, which may take some pressure off the guys to have a vasectomy. Unlike tubal ligations and vasectomies, there are no incisions or punctures with Essure. Dr. Cameron will also talk about a new Cervical Cancer/HPV vaccine and a new Shingles vaccine today. Human Papilloma Virus is the most prevalent sexually transmitted infection in the world. Dr. Bob will talk about new ways of preventing it as well as preventing Shingles--a dreaded disease that features an outbreak of rashes and blisters on the skin and is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. Welcome Dr. Bob!
Rotary Fish Fry at Hotel Kirkland
Next Thursday night, Rotarians and their wives will enjoy the annual Rotary Fish Fry at the spacious home of Robert and Jenny Kirkland. Since the Kirkland’s won’t be at home that night, a fun time is guaranteed for all! If you have not signed up and plan to attend, be sure to e-mail Barry Keathley at fiveseas@cddn.com. Unlike previous times, no buses this year, drive your own vehicle to the Kirkland estate. There will be no Rotary meeting a week from today.
Community Concert Support
Last week, Rotarian Mike Cox encouraged all of us to get involved in the arts by supporting the activities of the Community Concert Association. Membership not only allows you to see the many exciting local performances, but those in Murray and Dyersburg as well. Support the Arts!
Fall Fest Preview From Robin Wood & Glenda Chrisp
Last week, Rotarians enjoyed a Fall Fest preview from Fall Fest directors Robin Wood and Glenda Chrisp. Some of the events which have already taken place this week include the beauty pageants, Airport Extravaganza, Talent Contest, Backlawn Blues with Lew Jetton and Highway 61, Chalk Art Contest, Pride of Obion County Luncheon honoring Myrtle Harton and Patsy Cline salute last night with former Miss Tennessee, Kellye Cash of Milan. Events taking place tonight include the Fall Fest BBQ Cookoff and Fall Fest Feast from 5-8 at the Obion County Fairgrounds. Local volunteers will be serving plates full of the South’s favorite cuisine—mouth-watering, finger-licking barbecue and sides. The cost is $2 with proceeds going to help support the Obion County Rescue Squad. After tonight’s Union City-Obion County Central football game, the Magnificent Imposters Contest takes place at 10:30 at the Fairgrounds. This is fun for the entire family as individuals and groups lip sync and imitate their favorite performers. This year’s theme is Evening of the Stars. Saturday’s activities include Commercial Bank’s Kids Day from 9-11 at 815 E. Reelfoot Ave, featuring magic acts from Larry Mink, fingerprinting and safety lectures by law enforcement, and plenty of games and free food for the youngsters. The BBQ Judging takes place from 11-2 Saturday. Fall Fest concludes with the Buddy Jewell concert tomorrow night. The Steven Whitson Band will open for Jewell, starting at 7. Jewell was the winner of the 2003 Nashville Star contest and has soared in popularity as a country music artist.
