Friday, October 6, 2006 - Piano prodigy John Alston to visit Rotary
John Alston Overcomes and Over-Achieves!
Today, Rotarians are in store for a very special program featuring John Alston, a local youth who has beaten cancer, dealt with the tragic loss of his father, and because of his musical talents, has become somewhat of a spokesman for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This gifted pianist recently performed at Disneyland and is scheduled to be in New York in December for an appearance on the Today Show to help promote the work of St. Jude. While in New York, John will perform in Central Park. This musical prodigy plans a career in music and will audition for admission to the prestigious Juilliard School of Music in New York to help reach his musical potential. John is the son of Beverly Alson, who owns Beverly’s Bistro Sandwich Shop at First and Jackson St. His father, Union City firefighter and minister Bobby Alston, died last fall, a victim of Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Welcome John Alston to Rotary!
David Jolley on Career With U.S. Marshal System
Next week, Rotarians will hear from David G. Jolley, who was appointed United States Marshal for the Western District of Tennessee on February 14, 2002 by President George W. Bush, following confirmation by the U.S. Senate. He was nominated for the position by Senators Fred Thompson and Dr. Bill Frist. Jolley will discuss the history of the U.S. Marshal system—the nation’s primary fugitive hunting organization. In addition to apprehending fugitives and protecting federal judges and courts, marshals protect witnesses, serve court documents and transport federal prisoners. Marshal Jolley served as a special agent for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) from 1983 until his appointment as U.S. Marshal in 2002. Jolley holds a criminal justice degree from Middle Tennessee State University and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA.
Rotary Fish Fry Held
Last week, Rotarians and their wives enjoyed the annual Rotary Fish Fry held at the home of Robert and Jenny Kirkland. Inclement weather forced a one-day delay for the Fish Fry, which was pushed back from Thursday night to Friday night. Thanks to the Kirklands for opening their home to us once again and to Rhonda Hood for her hospitality. Thanks to Bob Reavis and his fish-cooking crew for the delicious meal and thanks to world-famous cardiac-rebounder Jere Baldridge for getting well just in time to come out and bartend for us.
Dr. Cameron Speaks To Rotary
Two weeks ago, Rotarians heard from Dr. Robert Cameron, who discussed a new birth control method that removes some of the pressure for the guys to have a vasectomy. The new Essure birth control method is a permanent form of sterilization for women that does not involve cutting into the body. Dr. Cameron began his talk by encouraging Rotarians to take advantage of the new HeartScore screening available at Baptist Memorial Hospital. It’s a test that determines the amount of calcium buildup in coronary arteries—a test that could prevent a heart attack because of its early detection capabilities. Dr. Bob also spoke about a new vaccine to treat the dreaded Shingles illness—a reactivation of the chicken pox virus. He also spoke about a n ew vaccine to combat the human papillomavirus (HPV), which can cause cervical cancer and abnormal cervical cells or lead to genital warts. Dr. Cameron concluded his talk by discussing many of the “firsts” The Woman’s Clinic of Union City has achieved during his five-decade history.
