No Meeting Next Week –Thanksgiving

Next week, there will be no Rotary meeting due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
Enjoy this special time of the year with family and friends and always give thanks for the many blessings of life.

Senator Herron to Speak in Two Weeks

In Two weeks, Rotarians will hear from State Senator Roy Herron, who will share thoughts from his book, How Can a Christian be in Politics?
Tyndale House has published this non-partisan look at how Christians can be in politics, not just as candidates but as holders of the highest office in the land—citizens.
Senator Herron is also likely to talk about recent developments in Nashville, including the indictments of legislators.

Mat Warner Reports on Memphis Grizzlies

Last week, Rotarians heard from Mat Warner, Director of Ticket Sales & Service for the NBA Memphis Grizzlies.
The meeting began with a sizzling roast of new Rotarian Doug Carter by Art Sparks.
A newcomer to the Mid-South, Warner admitted he was naïve to “Southern hospitality.”
Warner grew up in a “sports family” in Michigan, and knows first hand the importance that sports has on the youth of America.
“Issues related to sports carry over in the business world,” Warner said. “Sports teaches us the importance of teamwork and putting others ahead of ourselves.”
Mat joined the Grizzlies eight months ago—moving to Memphis from Los Angeles, where he worked with the L.A. Clippers NBA team for the past three years after receiving his degree in sports management from the University of Michigan.
Mat said the three key aspects of any professional sports team to a community is its impact on new business development, its role in community involvement, and ultimately, the product it puts on the floor night in and night out.
The Grizzlies are in the smallest market in the NBA, but have pumped more than $18 million into the Memphis community through such programs as the Grizzlies House at St. Jude Hospital, a place where parents of very sick children can stay free of charge while their child is treated for some of the world’s most dreaded illnesses.
Mat talked about how folks in the South want to know who they’re doing business with—as opposed to the fast-paced lifestyle of the West Coast. He noted how the FedEx Forum has sparked other development projects in the downtown Memphis area—helping get rid of blighted neighborhoods and bringing in new attractions for families and couples.
During Q&A, Mat admitted that BBQ has replaced sushi on his “must have” menu.
