Friday, December 1, 2006 - State Senator Roy Herron to Speak to Rotarians
State Senator Roy Herron Addresses Rotary
Today, Rotarians will hear from State Senator and fellow Rotarian Roy Herron , who will share some thoughts from his book, How Can A Christian Be In Politics? He will also likely discuss recent developments in Nashville including the indictments and sentencing of some legislators and some of the key issues facing the new General Assembly, which convenes in January. Herron, a Vanderbilt-trained lawyer and former Methodist minister who won election almost 20 years ago to the Tennessee House, is a well-respected Tennessee politician who lives on a farm that has been in his family since 1813. In his book, Herron sets out to prove that the terms “Christian” and “politics” are compatible. Senator Herron and his wife, Nancy, have three sons: John, Rick and Ben. He has sponsored bills for crime victims, ethics and whistleblower laws, anti-crime initiatives and health care reforms. Welcome Sen. Herron!
Chorus Kids and Voices of UCES Coming Next Week
Next week, the sights and sounds of Christmas will come to Rotary in the form of the Chorus Kids and the Voices of Union City Elementary School as the students make their annual visit to our club. The Chorus Kids, comprised of Second and Third grade students under the direction of Linda Harrelson, will perform such favorites as Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree, Must Be Santa, Winder Wonderland and Jingle Jive. The Voices of UCES, comprised of Fourth and Fifth grade students under the direction of Nolin Cloyd, will perform such favorites as O How Lovely is the Evening, Let it Snow, Everybody’s Going on a Sleigh Ride, A Song of Peace, and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Some of you may want to invite your wives to this special Holiday program. We’ll list the names of the students in next week’s bulletin.
Coaches Chandler and Sisco report on UCHS Basketball Season
Two weeks ago, Rotarians heard from Union City High School basketball coaches Jeff Chandler and Shane Sisco on the 2006-07 high school basketball season, which is now in full swing. In fact, UCHS plays its first home District 14-A games tonight when the Tornadoes host the Humboldt Vikings. Again this year, the girls games tip at 6 pm, with the boys contests starting around 7:40. Prior to the coaches discussing their teams and the outlook for the new season, Roast-Master Mike Cox conducted a very thorough roasting of new Rotarian Dr. Wright Jernigan. Coach Jeff Chandler said he was very pleased with the many accomplishments of his girls’ team a year ago, when they set a school record with 23 wins and came within one victory of advancing to the Sub-State round. So far this year, the UC Girls are 3-1, having won three straight games heading into tonight’s contest with Humboldt. Five players graduated from least year’s team and key returning players include DeBrisha Robinson, Labrica Ward, Allison McCullough, Brittany Taylor, and Marcetta Ross. Coach Shane Sisco, now in his eighth season at UCHS, guided UC to the Class-A State Championship last year, but in the process, graduated Mr. Basketball and all-time UCHS scoring leader Marquis Weddle, along with Xavier Robinson, Tony Mosley and Nate Coleman. UC is off to a stunning 5-0 start this year and running away from their opponents—with average wins of 25-30 points each night out. Key returners this year include M. J. Brown, Jeremy Simpson, Andre Coby, Cedric Allen, Cameron Callicott, Tony Wilkins, Pat Polk and Ryan Simpson. Shane also introduced his new assistant coach Michael Hart. “This is the hardest working group I’ve had in fourteen years of coaching,” Sisco quipped. “Dad taught me that if you’ve got a good point-guard, you can be competitive. I believe we’ll be exciting to watch and we’ll play hard each night out.” Good luck to both UCHS teams during the 2006-07 season!
